One standard drink in the US contains roughly 14 grams of pure alcohol — the equivalent of 12 oz of regular beer (5% ABV), 5 oz of wine (12% ABV), or 1.5 oz of distilled spirits (40% ABV).
It is critical to understand that BAC calculators provide estimates only. Individual BAC levels are influenced by many factors that the calculator cannot fully account for, including food intake (eating before or during drinking slows absorption), medications, liver health, genetic variations in alcohol-metabolizing enzymes, fatigue, and tolerance. Two people of the same weight and gender who drink the same amount can have noticeably different BAC levels. The calculator should never be used to determine whether it is safe to drive — that decision should be based on a measured breathalyzer or, ideally, not drinking at all when driving.
The effects of alcohol progress predictably with BAC level. At 0.02–0.03%, you feel mildly relaxed with a slight mood lift. At 0.04–0.06%, reaction time and coordination begin to decline. At 0.08% (the legal driving limit in most US states), judgment, concentration, and coordination are significantly impaired. At 0.15–0.20%, you experience major motor impairment and the risk of blackout increases. Above 0.30%, consciousness is at risk, and levels above 0.40% can be fatal.
